What is NRO in Pakistan's Political History?

The Term NRO Stands for "National Reconciliation Ordinance".
in Urdu it is

"اردو:  "قومی مفاہمتی فرمان

National Reconciliation Ordinance was a controversial ordinance issued by the former President of Pakistan, General Parvaiz Musharraf on the 5th of October 2007.
It granted amnesty to politicians, political workers, and bureaucrats who were accused of corruption, embezzlement, money laundering, murder, and terrorism between 1st January 1986 and 12th October 1999, the time between two states of martial laws in Pakistan.

Beneficiaries of the National Reconciliation Ordinance (NRO):

The beneficiaries of the National Reconciliation Ordinance (NRO) included several prominent politicians and bureaucrats in Pakistan. Some of the notable beneficiaries of the NRO were:

  • Benazir Bhutto: Former Prime Minister of Pakistan, who was in exile at the time and faced corruption charges.

  • Asif Ali Zardari: Husband of Benazir Bhutto and later became President of Pakistan, also facing corruption charges.

  • Altaf Hussain: The founder and former leader of the Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM), facing various criminal cases.

  • Wasi Zafar: A former law minister and politician, accused of corruption and other charges.

  • Rehman Malik: A former government official and close aide to Benazir Bhutto, facing corruption cases.

  • Anwar Saifullah Khan: A politician associated with the Pakistan People's Party (PPP), facing corruption charges.

  • Raja Pervez Ashraf: Former Prime Minister of Pakistan, who also faced corruption allegations.

There were many other politicians and bureaucrats who were accused of various crimes during the specified period. After the Supreme Court's ruling declaring the NRO unconstitutional, the cases against these beneficiaries were reopened, and some of them faced legal proceedings.

Conclusion:

In short, the simplistic definition of NRO would be that all the cases against a person would b withdrawn and his past crimes, between the specified time period, would go Unpunished.
It is worth noting that, this Ordinance was declared unconstitutional by the Supreme Court of Pakistan on 16th of December 2009.
